Guidelines for Class Use/Distinguishing Characteristics

This class is intended for use at the entry and journey levels.

Examples of Work

Installs system software. Develops or modifies system software. Debugs and tests system software and system software packages purchased from vendors. Consults with system analysts and application programmers on program design and access methods. Develops system programming standards and ensures efficient machine and system use. Identifies and resolves system software and hardware problems. Prepares documentation for use in system development and in programmer and operator training. Consults with management in evaluating hardware/software and makes recommendations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of software testing and debugging. Knowledge of computer equipment operations and capabilities. Knowledge of the in-house operating system and methods of evaluating alternatives to the operating system. Knowledge of methods of system analysis for determining equipment configurations. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to identify and resolve problems. Ability to establish working relationships with vendors, staff members and users.

Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and experience in the modification and maintenance of system programs, the design and development of system software or the testing and debugging of system software.
