General Nature of Work

Serves as an assistant on a main frame computer system preparing the equipment for operation from instructions and performing other duties that require judgment within set procedures.

Guidelines for Class Use/Distinguishing Characteristics

This class is intended for use at the entry and journey level.

Examples of Work

Monitors and controls computer equipment; manipulates control switches on console panel following standard instructions. Mounts tape and disk files; changes forms on printers; changes cards on punchers and labels output; separates printed output, run decks and run books; cleans hardware. Observes equipment performance during runs; detects errors of operation or program failure; corrects errors of operation; advises computer programmers of program errors. Assists in determining equipment settings and operating instructions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of operation and care of main frame computer system and its accessories. Knowledge of capabilities of a main frame computer system and its accessories. Ability to follow complex instructions.

Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma with basic knowledge of computers.
