General Nature of Work

Performs diversified computer operation duties requiring judgment within established procedures; assists in directing the activities of a computer operations section.

Guidelines for Class Use/Distinguishing Characteristics

This class may be used as shift supervisor.

Examples of Work

Monitors system to determine equipment or program failure; operates control console; confers with technical personnel; switches auxiliary equipment in to circuit. Determines equipment setup and run operation through program operating instructions; develops operating instructions and procedures. Coordinates computer operation activities, to include shift operations, training and work flow. Assists in equipment evaluation, selection, installation and use. Serves as shift supervisor and assists in scheduling computer operations and staffing. Serves as a liaison with user agencies. Serves as manager during his/her absence.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the operation and care of mainframe computers and their accessories. Knowledge of computer operating systems and of the preparation and use of job control cards. Knowledge of computer cost and work production. Ability to supervise personnel and coordinate the work activities of a computer section. Ability to establish working relationships with user agencies and operations personnel.

Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and experience in the operation of computers and accessories or experience in a client server environment.
