Administers the support of database products for a mainframe data processing installation; develops data standards, documentation and security and authorization procedures.
Positions assigned to this class serve as the first-level professional staff in database administration or as advanced-level database administrators. Positions may supervise subordinate technical staff, though supervision is not required for classification at this level. In larger operations, this class may be used for an assistant director of database administration.
Plans, organizes and administers database system activities. Trains database specialists and other technical support staff. Installs and tests database management systems and related systems. Maintains the physical descriptions of database components; develops standards, data definitions, documentation and design of security systems. Establishes and maintains contact with vendors for software package support and problem resolution. Maintains system integrity and compliance with standards; conducts tests to determine the integrity of databases. Monitors and measures the performance of the database; reports problems to the appropriate individuals. Helps to ensure maximum on-line availability of the database. Meets with customers to determine information needs and database requirements.
Knowledge of database management systems, concepts and design methodologies. Knowledge of database structures, operating systems, data security, systems integrity and monitoring and auditing activities. Ability to prepare and present technical and nontechnical reports in a clear and concise manner. Ability to establish positive working relationships with technical staff, customers and others involved in database management.
A high school diploma and work experience in systems development and maintenance, technical support, or the support of database management systems; or a bachelor's degree in a related field.
