Provides professional medical care and/or treatment services in a state institution, hospital, clinic or other medical program.

Some incumbents direct a medical facility or program or a specialized medical section.

Examples of Work

Prepares medical histories and examines patients in a state institution, hospital or clinic. Diagnoses disorders and administers medical treatment services; determines and prescribes medication and treatment for patients. Supervises staff in providing proper patient care, treatment and medication as prescribed; supervises a patient care facility, specialized section of a facility or program. Prepares progress notes, summaries and general evaluations of patient records; consults with relatives and friends concerning the patient's physical condition. Establishes treatment procedures and guidelines for medical services; develops long-term training in investigative and preventive medical programs. Develops and maintains ongoing medical education programs to promote good health among patients. Provides consultative services and educational programs; attends and participates in staff meetings, conferences, lectures, seminars and case presentations. Coordinates activities of medical services in health departments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of theory, principles and practices of medicine in the assigned area of services specialization. Knowledge of techniques involved in the care and treatment of patients. Knowledge of administrative practices and procedures, rules and regulations and policies and standards used in rendering medical care. Knowledge of recent developments and pertinent federal and state laws, rules and regulations in the applicable field of medicine. Ability to diagnose and treat diseases and injuries. Ability to write and interpret professional, technical and administrative reports and papers. Ability to prepare educational materials and demonstrate and teach the principles and techniques of the applicable specialty. Ability to supervise professional and nonprofessional employees in the care and treatment of patients. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with state officials, professional and lay groups and the general public.

Special Requirements

Licensed or eligibility for licensure to practice medicine in South Carolina.

Minimum Requirements

Graduation from an accredited medical school, plus completion of an internship or one year of residency training.
