General Nature of Work

Directs the production of specialized scientific glass equipment and apparatus.

Examples of Work

Oversees and conducts the design, fabrication, modification and repair of scientific glassware or apparatus. Advises and consults with research personnel in designing and fabricating glassware. Supervises and conducts research and experimentation to determine stress, tensile strength, chemical compatibility, coefficients of expansion and tempering of glass. Fabricates custom metal components for use in glassware using a variety of metals. Participates in the preparation of research publications. Provides formal instruction in glassblowing techniques to research staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of glassblowing processes and techniques. Ability to interpret complex formulas, drawings, sketches and other instructions. Ability to design complex scientific glassware and apparatus. Ability to organize, direct and evaluate the work of others.

Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma, completion of a glassblowing apprenticeship program and work experience as a scientific glassblower.
