General Nature of Work

Provides therapeutic nutrition services to patients/clients in clinics, health care institutions or homes within designated program or units. Plans, implements, directs and evaluates nutrition services.

Guidelines for Class Use/Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class include entry-level and journey-level Registered Dietitians.

Examples of Work

Participates in the planning, development and implementation of nutrition services. Assesses nutritional status of high-risk individuals by performing and/or evaluating anthropometric measurements, biochemical tests and clinical, dietary, economic or social data. Assesses the need for community education programs related to disease prevention and health promotion. Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of nutrition standards of care. Participates in planning, supervising and evaluating field experience for undergraduate and graduate students in public health nutrition or clinical training for dietetic students.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of public health nutrition as related to the control of disease and the promotion of health. Knowledge of trends in the fields of health care, nutrition and dietetics. Knowledge of principles and practices of dietetics and human nutrition. Knowledge of program planning, implementation and evaluation techniques. Knowledge of epidemiology and biostatistics. Knowledge of current laws and regulations as related to health care, food and nutrition services. Knowledge of principles of data collection, analysis and design of management information systems. Ability to deal tactfully with public and agency staff.

Special Requirements

Must be licensed with the South Carolina Board of Dietetic Registration or eligible for SC license.

Minimum Requirements

A master’s degree and registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration as a Registered Dietitian or registration eligible. Or a bachelor’s degree with professional clinical or public health experience and registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration as a Registered Dietitian.
