Performs semi-skilled to skilled trade duties, operates light to heavy equipment, and assists with technical forest management activities in support of a forest management program or a nursery or tree improvement operation.
This classification is used for employees performing trade duties, equipment operations, forest management activities, or nursery or tree improvement operations. Employees may assist with fire suppression and prescribed burns.
Inspects and maintains infrastructure. Performs building and ground construction and maintenance to include repairs to buildings, sheds, docks, signs, etc. Performs operator maintenance on all assigned equipment. Performs ditching, grading, sloping, shaping, and spreading of dirt and/or aggregate. Inspects, enhances, and maintains wildlife openings, dove fields, and wildlife habitat by discing, plowing, cultivating, planting, mowing, spreading fertilizer, use of herbicides, etc. Assists foresters and technicians with technical aspects of forest management, including timber cruising, forest product sale preparation, site preparation, acreage measurements, tree planting, seedling survival checks, etc. Plows firebreaks and assists in prescribed burns and wildfire suppression. Performs nursery or tree improvement duties. Participates in activities in support of agency's mission and goals, and performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge of safety practices in performing semi-skilled to skilled trade duties. Ability to operate light to heavy mechanized equipment. Knowledge of soil maintenance, fertilizers and farm machines. Knowledge of the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Ability to make emergency and general repairs and adjustments to equipment. Ability to perform manual labor. Ability to prepare clear and concise reports. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with coworkers, other agencies/entities, and the public. Knowledge of forestry, nursery or tree improvement management programs.
Some positions require a commercial driver's license. Some positions require registration as a firefighter with the State Fire Marshal.
A high school diploma and experience in operation of light to heavy mechanized equipment, forestry management, nursery or tree improvement operations, or relevant work. An associate degree in forestry or natural resources may be substituted for the required work experience.
