General Nature of Work

Performs technical duties in support of a forest management program to include recreation and wildlife management, forest inventory and analysis program, insect and disease program, or a nursery or tree improvement operation.

Guidelines for Class Use/Distinguishing Characteristics

This classification is used for employees performing forestry management activities, recreational activities, wildlife management, collecting Forest Inventory and Analysis data, performing insect and disease technical duties, or nursery or tree improvement operations. Employees may assist with fire suppression and prescribed burns.

Examples of Work

Performs timber cruising, timber marking, collection of forest inventory and analysis data, prescribed burning, wildfire suppression, tree planting checks, wildlife management, and recreational management. Assists with forest product sale preparation to include boundary lines, evaluations, announcements, and awards of contracts. Checks forest management operations such as timber harvesting, pine straw raking, best management practices compliance, tree planting, site preparation, etc. Obtains supplies, equipment and materials to carry out nursery or laboratory functions. Assists in pesticide and herbicide applications. Collects and records insect and disease data. Conducts germination checks. Establishes, maintains, and measures progeny tests. Participates in activities in support of agency's mission and goals, and performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of forest measurements and timber cruising. Knowledge of forestry management techniques and practices. Knowledge of geographical information systems and global positioning systems. Knowledge of handling, testing, storage, and laws relating to the shipment of seed. Knowledge of tree nursery and tree improvement operations. Knowledge of soil maintenance, fertilizers and farm machines. Knowledge of the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Knowledge of forest pests. Knowledge of Forest Inventory and Analysis data collection. Knowledge of laboratory procedures. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with coworkers, other agencies/entities, and the public. Knowledge of forestry, nursery or tree improvement management.

Special Requirements

Some positions require a commercial driver's license. Some positions require registration as a firefighter with the State Fire Marshal. Some positions require certification to collect forest and inventory analysis data.

Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and experience in forestry management or nursery operations. An associate degree in forestry or natural resources may be substituted for the required work experience.
