Supervises or performs advanced technical duties in support of forest management to include recreational and wildlife management, infrastructure and road maintenance, forest inventory and analysis, insect and disease program, or nursery or tree improvement operations.
This classification is used for employees supervising or performing advanced forest management activities to included recreation and wildlife management, infrastructure and road maintenance, collecting Forest Inventory and Analysis data, performing insect and disease technical duties, and nursery or seed tree improvement operations. Employees may assist with fire suppression and prescribed burns.
Oversees timber cruising, timber marking, collection of forest inventory and analysis data, prescribed burning, wildfire suppression, tree planting checks, wildlife management, and recreation management. Directs forest product sale preparation to include boundary lines, evaluations, announcements, and awards of contracts. Directs and checks forest management operations such as timber harvesting, pine straw raking, best management practices compliance, tree planting, site preparation, etc. Directs trade and equipment operations to include infrastructure and road maintenance. Protects states' natural resources. Directs or performs law enforcement duties within the designated area of responsibility. Obtains supplies, materials and equipment for nursery or laboratory. Oversees and conducts seed germination tests. Analyzes soils and plans fertilization and treatment to ensure proper growth and development of seedlings and seed orchard grafted plants. Supervises breeding programs for the various orchards, including control pollinations, progeny testing and progeny test measurements. Plans the establishment, maintenance, and measurement of progeny tests.
Knowledge of forest measurements and timber cruising. Knowledge of forestry management techniques and practices. Knowledge of geographical information systems and global positioning systems. Knowledge of handling, testing, storage and laws relating to the shipment of seed. Knowledge of tree nursery and tree improvement operations. Knowledge of soil maintenance, fertilizers and farm machines. Knowledge of the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Knowledge of forest insects and diseases. Knowledge of Forest Inventory and Analysis data collection. Knowledge of South Carolina laws and law enforcement practices and procedures. Knowledge of forestry, nursery or tree improvement management. Ability to plan, supervise and direct the work of others. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with coworkers, other agencies/entities, and the public.
Some positions require a commercial driver's license. Some positions require registration as a firefighter with the State Fire Marshal. Some positions require certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976. Some positions require supervisory experience.
A high school diploma and experience in forestry management or nursery operations. An associate degree in forestry or natural resources may be substituted for the required work experience.
