Positions in this class direct or assist in directing economic analyses for the Public Service Commission or the Chief Economist.

Examples of Work

Assists in or directs the construction and utilization of complex econometric models for economic forecasting of rate changes, power usage and industry cost patterns. Evaluates new and existing issuers to formulate planning and financing procedures and develop regulatory policies. Assists in or directs the development of economic data bases for use in all phases of regulatory activity. Serves as an expert witness in regulation proceedings on various economic issues. Drafts the South Carolina Economic Report and monthly economic scenarios to indicate the status of the state economy. Provides expert advice, including impact analysis and interpretations of socioeconomic developments, for the Chief Economist to use in Budget and Control Board matters. Gives oral presentations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of financial and economic analysis, including the design and application of economic, financial and engineering models. Knowledge of the business operations of electric, telecommunications, natural gas and other regulated utilities. Skill in the use of computers and computer programs related to economic statistical research. Ability to evaluate a variety of complex economic trends. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of a professional staff.

Minimum Requirements

A bachelor's degree in a related subject area and experience conducting economic, financial or statistical research.
