General Nature of Work

Assists speech and hearing therapists in providing therapeutic services to persons with communicative and hearing disorders.

Examples of Work

Administers group and individual therapy to develop auditory awareness, auditory discrimination, speech awareness and/or awareness of environmental control through speech. Conducts routine testing and speech correction procedures for clients having limited oral communication skills. Conducts prelinguistic activities and basic articulation drill therapy. Conducts training in special language techniques such as sign language, communication boards, etc. Provides electronic hearing aid evaluation and makes minor hearing aid repairs; makes ear impression and performs hearing aid orientation. Confers with teachers, therapists and other staff members concerning therapeutic activities; assists in developing lesson plans and in evaluating pupil performance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of principles and techniques in the individual and group treatment of speech and hearing impairments. Knowledge of the principles of psychology and education related to teaching individuals with speech and hearing impairments. Knowledge of speech and hearing defects. Ability to exercise patience and tact in dealing with patients.

Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and experience in speech and hearing programs. An associate degree in education, psychology or a related field may be substituted for the required experience.
