General Nature of Work

Assists in the administration of various forms of recreation for residents at a state hospital or institution.

Guidelines for Class Use/Distinguishing Characteristics

Incumbents assist residents as they participate in individual and group recreation. Duties performed are routine, repetitive and follow clearly prescribed standards.

Examples of Work

Directs the participation of residents in such activities as sports, games, hobbies, crafts, outings, scouting, community sings, parties and movies. Instructs residents in methods, techniques and rules of various recreational activities. Assists in the development of special recreational events to celebrate holidays, promote socialization and meet the needs, desires and abilities of residents. Escorts residents to and from recreation areas and ensures their safety as they participate in activities. Conducts surveys to obtain information about residents' recreational interests and abilities. Coordinates activities with nursing assistants, cottage parents and other staff members; participates in treatment team meetings that evaluate residents. Maintains recreational equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of various types of recreational activities. Knowledge of recreational therapy principles, techniques and methods. Ability to stimulate and sustain the interest of residents. Ability to instruct residents in various recreational activities. Ability to prepare routine reports.
