Under general supervision assists the staff veterinarian with needed medical procedures, medication administration and other tasks deemed necessary by the veterinarian.
Supervises and participates in the daily feeding and care of animals. Prepares proper diets for all animals. Maintains records of food intake, vaccinations, de-wormers and medications, general health, and behavior of animals. Administers vaccinations, medications and treatments as directed by the veterinarian. Assists veterinarian with surgery as needed. Maintains sanitation standards in all facilities. Maintains all veterinary equipment. Maintains inventory of zoo diets, medications and veterinary supplies. Assists with security, maintenance, and general management of a facility treating and/or housing animals. Supervises and participates in animal habitat maintenance and facility upkeep. Supervises the facility in the absence of the veterinarian.
Skill in the use of a computer. Knowledge of and experience with animal husbandry, zoological veterinary care and animal restraint. Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the care of animals. Knowledge of how to properly care for animals. Knowledge of the prevention and treatment of animal injuries and illnesses. Knowledge of how to independently conduct medical tests relevant to animal care. Skill in the setup, operation and basic repair of laboratory equipment. Ability to perform basic mathematical operations that involve fractions, percentages and decimals. Ability to record data accurately and maintain records properly. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Must possess or obtain a valid South Carolina drivers license. Must have a current Veterinary Technician License in the state of South Carolina.
Associate’s degree in veterinary technology and relevant experience in animal care.
