General Nature of Work

Under general supervision, performs wildland fire protection duties and supervises a wildland fire suppression team. Exercises responsibility for the enforcement of state and federal laws including forestry, agriculture, wildlife, outdoor burning, litter, and DHEC smoke regulations. Conducts criminal or administrative investigations.

Guidelines for Class Use/Distinguishing Characteristics

This classification is used for employees performing duties in fire suppression, forest management, and law enforcement; and performs entry-level and journey-level and first-line supervisory duties.

Examples of Work

Performs wildland fire prevention work. Performs wildland fire control planning and directs fire suppression activities. Ensures that preventive maintenance goals are met. Responds to calls in assigned areas to prevent crime and enforce laws. Protects states' natural resources. Performs law enforcement duties within the designated area of responsibility. Investigates wildland fires to determine cause and damages. Recruits, trains, and supervises a fire suppression team. Performs administrative duties to include review of monthly forest fire activity reports. Assists professional foresters in the preparation and implementation of forest management plans, reforestation, or other landowner services. Provides technical assistance to local governments on forestry issues. Maintains current knowledge of state and local affairs affecting forestry. Works cooperatively with local governments to promote forestry and sound forestry practices. Participates in allied forestry organizations' activities. Participates in activities in support of agency's mission and goals, and performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the assigned area and operation of fire control equipment. Knowledge of South Carolina forest fire laws and law enforcement practices and procedures. Knowledge of South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) forest management programs, policies, and procedures. Ability to act effectively in emergency or stressful situations. Ability to plan, direct, and evaluate the work of subordinates. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Special Requirements

Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976. All positions require a commercial driver's license. Must be registered as a firefighter with the State Fire Marshal.

Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and two years’ experience in forest fire control, forestry management, or law enforcement.
